For a grown-up
Each numbered card is one child's single fruit choice. Ask a real class question after the journey. Accept pointing and oral explanations.
- Big idea
- Record each choice once. Pictures help us see and compare the groups.
- Know
- A group uses one sorting rule. One picture stands for one choice. An empty group has no choices.
- Understand
- Rearranging choices does not change their number. Each picture must match a real response. Equal groups have a tie.
- Do
- Sort by fruit; connect the same choice cards to pictures; count, compare and explain the groups; add one new response.
- Key vocabulary
- Sort: put things into groups using a rule. Choice: what one person picked. Data: information we collect. Pictogram: a display using pictures. Same number: equal counts. Tie: groups with the same number of choices.
- Prerequisite knowledge
- Count small sets, match objects and compare groups. Begin with physical choice cards if one-to-one correspondence needs support.
- Misconceptions
- Record a child once, not in every row. Moving or spreading a card does not add a choice. No choices means an empty labelled row. Compare the number of pictures, not how far a row is spread.
- Progression
- From classifying familiar objects to organising responses and displaying them with a one-picture-one-choice key. First Level extends this to tallies, tables, pictograms and bar charts. Scaled keys are not used here.
- Readiness indicators
- The child applies one sorting rule, records each response once, matches picture counts to cards, compares named groups and interprets ties and empty rows.
- Transfer and follow-up
- Sort the fresh four-child collection, then collect real class choices. The local practice revisits row counts, comparisons, recording a single response and empty categories.
- Curriculum connection
- Early information handling: sorting and organising familiar objects, displaying choices and discussing what they show; classification, conservation and one-to-one correspondence.
