A dyslexia screener is a structured way to gather evidence about literacy, processing and learning patterns. It can help a teacher notice clusters of strength and difficulty that may benefit from support, monitoring or further investigation. Screening is not the same as a formal diagnostic assessment and cannot establish that a pupil or student has dyslexia.

Spelling and writing patterns

Representing sounds in words, applying spelling patterns and reflecting on consistency in written work.

Vocabulary, context and word structure

Using sentence meaning, vocabulary, roots, prefixes and suffixes to recognise and understand words.

Comprehension

Understanding short written information while keeping unnecessary memory demands limited.

Verbal memory and spoken instructions

Holding short spoken sequences in mind and following one-step or short two-step directions.

Organisation, sequencing and reading comfort

Order and classroom routines, plus learner reflections on fatigue, tracking and helpful access adjustments.

Optional teacher observations

Teachers can use the pattern to plan support and monitor what changes over time. A profile should not be read in isolation or used to suggest that a particular score proves dyslexia.

International use

Can the screener be used outside Scotland?

CfE Maths Hub was created for Scottish education, but dyslexia-related literacy and processing difficulties are not unique to one curriculum. Teachers and schools outside Scotland may therefore find the evidence useful for classroom support planning.
