Big Idea

Equal parts of one whole can be named as fractions.

Know

  • equal means the same size or the same amount
  • a half is one of two equal parts
  • a quarter is one of four equal parts

Understand

  • fair sharing means the parts must be equal
  • a shape can be split in different ways and still show equal parts
  • unequal parts are not halves or quarters

  • identify equal and unequal parts

Misconceptions

  • Two parts are not automatically halves; the two parts must be equal.
  • A larger-looking piece can make a share unfair even when there are two pieces.
  • Colour helps us see a part, but equal size or amount is what matters.
